POSITION SUMMARY

A U.S. branch of a Japanese asset management firm is seeking a Risk Officer to internalize risk management functions that were previously handled by the headquarters. This position plays a key role in leading the development and implementation of a local risk management framework, with a primary focus on investment risk management and additional responsibilities in operational risk across the organization.

The ideal candidate will leverage advanced expertise in risk management and hands-on experience in middle and back-office operations. Working closely with the investment team, executive leadership, and the parent company, the Risk Officer will help establish and maintain a globally aligned risk management structure. This is a strategic and practical role that contributes directly to the growth and stability of the U.S. operations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Risk Management

  • Develop and implement risk management policies and procedures

  • Identify, assess, monitor, and report investment risks

  • Align with the parent company’s risk policies and apply them effectively

  • Prepare and submit risk assessment reports to senior management

  • Propose and implement risk mitigation strategies

 

Middle and Back Office Operations

  • Handle trade processing, settlement, reconciliation, reporting, and corporate actions

  • Oversee daily operations of investment trusts and funds

  • Manage relationships with custodians, counterparties, and service providers

  • Respond to audits and ensure regulatory compliance

  • Analyze investment performance and provide improvement recommendations

  • Maintain and update operational data for funds

  • Support the launch of new funds/portfolios

 

Communication

  • Report to executive leadership and the parent company

  • Collaborate with local staff, including the Chief Compliance Officer

  • Liaise with external partners, auditors, and regulatory authorities

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, accounting, economics, business, or related field

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in risk management

  • Business-level fluency in both Japanese and English

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS /SKILLS

  • Experience in middle/back office operations in asset management

  • Certifications such as CFA or FRM

  • Proficiency in Excel, VBA, SQL

  • High ethical standards and strong compliance awareness

  • Self-starter with strong teamwork skills
